Additional details about this course design can be found on my CV.
For this project, the student researched traditional Japanese pattern motifs, garment construction (drawing from books, archival materials, and the historic textiles collection), and traditional dress styles. She designed an original motif inspired by traditional patterns and hand-printed the yardage using silkscreen techniques. The garment was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Japanese dress, informed by family photographs and her research.

For this project, the student conducted research on themes of visible and invisible boundaries, femme representation in media, zine culture, and women’s history. Drawing from archival materials, feminist publications, and media resources, she examined how women’s voices have been expressed, muted, or reshaped through time. She investigated ideas around personal space and bodily autonomy, as well as the broader reach of safety and security for individuals and communities. A short clip is embedded below.
